Relief at last!

Most mums (and some dads) know what its like to suffer from sleep deprivation. I'm pretty certain I can say with 98% accuracy that I haven't slept a night through completely since JJ was born nearly 9 years ago. There's a 2% margin of possible error there as I have a lousy memory, but I think my hubby will agree, we can't remember it ever happening. All four of our children have varying allergies and intollerances. I find they are similar to children who have a cold - sometimes they're not so bad during the day but at night they can become miserable. Our house is a bit like the Cinderella story, it turns into a pumpkin at midnight (actually its more like dailylight savings time, the metamorphosis begins at 11pm)

When they do have a proper virus, the sleep problems are compounded. After a few nights of 'little than normal' sleep, I turn into a pumpkin! No one can function when mum is a pumpkin. In the name of sleep and sanity, these last two weeks I have taken some drastic measures.

We have three mini pumpkins in the home - Benny, Lani and Sisi.

Bennys problem is always athsma and eczema. His nights are worse again if he eats something he shouldn't.
He has been on some preventative medicine for the last 3 weeks or so, plus his ventolin at night. I usually get up to Benny two to three times on a normal night, one of these will be to give him his puffer. I taught him today how to administer it to himself - so fingers crossed tonight he does!
I have had lots of trouble getting on top of Bennys eczema, but I think we may have just had a breakthrough. In my desperation for sleep, I cut wheat completely out of his diet (he is already egg, nut and dairy free) and introduced bleach baths (after much research)

This is what his eczema looked like two weeks ago:

It shows a spot on his leg. It was like this on both legs, both arms, his chest and the fingers on his right hand. Often he had to go to school with all four fingers bandaged up so he could hold his pencils to write. It really bothered me that he was so uncomfortable every day and would cry and scratch every night. It got to the point where I just couldn't touch it to put cream on because it was too painful for him and we couldn't bath him because the water stung too much. After one and a half weeks of bleach baths and no wheat, here's what his legs looked like tonight before bed:
The relief I feel for him is huge! I am so happy he can now sleep without the aggravation of being itchy through the night. He is so proud of his eczema free body. Its the first time in years he has had some relief. I hope we have found the answer and can stay on top of it now. I am hoping tonight will be a Benny free night for me :)

My second little pumpkin is Lani. She is extremely sensitive to the foods she eats and can have awful night episodes that include lots of crying, sometimes screaming, hiting and throwing. Her night problems aren't constant like the other two, she goes in cycles. A bad episode will last for three nights, each one going for 1-2 hours. I took her completely off yeast the same time I took Benny off wheat and she has slept through for the last week straight! Two pumkins down.

The last little pumpkin is Sisi. She was born with reflux and dealt with it as a bub by holding her breath and turning purple. She had a couple of stays in hospital as the doctors thought she had a heart condition. She would set the heart monitors off all through the night by holding her breath. In the end I took her home at 4 weeks old with a box of reflux tablets I had to somehow get her to eat. She held her breath randomly until she was 6 months old. There was no way I was having our baby turning herself purple in another room, so she slept in my arms so I could give her a gentle nudge to get her breathing again. She was more than happy to stay sleeping in my arms over the last two and a half years until I had tantrum the other week about how tired I was getting. The last month or so she has been sleeping with benny but around midnight she sneaks back into bed with me. I do enjoy sleeping with her and we both love the cuddles but it does add to my tiredness during the day unfortunately - so this is what we have come up with:
The Terrys were kind enough to lend us their toddler bed so she can sleep in her own bed but beside me. She went straight to sleep without a fuss tonight. Lets see if I can get her to stay there all night.

JJ has some eczema too, although its not as bad as bennys, it has been getting him up every night for the last week. Luckily for me he is much less of a pumpkin than the others during the night, I tell him where his cream is and he puts some on himself and goes back to bed.

I often wish I had Jobs mad skills of being able to sleep through everything. He says to me each morning "So how did you sleep?"

"Well....................!!"

Cute!

Tonight during storytime.

I think I may have the cutest kids...

Morning workout update

Mariah, Kym and I have been lucky enough to have the pleasure of Belindas company this last 2 weeks of school holidays. Its been so much fun, she brings lots of laughter to the morning. I especially love having someone I can partner up with who is more my................bone structure?! haha - and ability. I felt bad for Mariah this morning though as she planned an excellent work out and we goofed around a bit too much.

*We're sorry Mariah, we love you!*

Here's some photos of this mornings exercises. Its the third time we've had this workout. Kym and I really enjoyed it when Mariah did it for us so she repeated it for Belinda. There are a few stations, 6 I think in total today and after we've completed each one, we receive a clue. At the end of the workout, we put the clues together to figure out a mystery statement. The first mornings answer was "We are awesome." The second time she did it was "We are very pretty." This mornings message was "We are Warriors!" She is so creative and so honest :)

So here we are early this morning:

Kym and Mariah holding the plank for 60 seconds
As is that wasn't bad enough, there was the side plank too.
Crunchtime

Belindas game face. She was a pro at this one..

Ninjas!  This one is a tiny bit scary ;)

One of Kyms favourite ways to run - like a prancing horse....seriously

                                    Sometimes I can't believe we're related...

This was a funny exercise (when Belinda and I did it)

Serious stuff

Kym and Belinda solved the riddle and discovered they were Warriors!!

It wouldn't be a proper workout blog without a group photo

....and a crazy group photo..

We are awesome, very pretty Warriors!!!

(not sure about the 'pretty' after that photo....maybe just Awesome Warriors!!)

Snow in all the wrong places!

Since Monday was a public holiday, we thought it would be fun to go to the snow. The Rogers, two lots of Terrys and the Tais headed out to Ben Lomond at 9.45am. I couldn't help but wonder how much colder it would be at the snow since it was freezing inside the house! I took pictures of the kids getting ready, they are watching their own breath in Lani's bedroom.

We met at the 'Perth Terrys' and headed out. All we could see was fog.

Mum called while we were on the way. I was talking to her on the phone while winding my window down and taking shots. One minute after I took the above photo, the atmosphere changed to this:

Tassie is funny like that. Sometimes we think its a freezing, foggy day and then we drive out of Perth and its beautiful and Sunny! You can drive through frost, fog and sun all in the one short trip.
Here's an example: See the clump of fog....imagine living in that? You'd think it was cold all over.

We headed up the mountain and the kids started squealing with delight when they saw the snow on the sides of the road.

We settlled on a spot a little way up since we were all too cheap to pay park fees and go higher up the mountain. Poor Sam had to help us less experienced snow trekers to get our cars up the hill.

Eventually we all pulled into the carpark and finished putting our gear on.

As soon as we got there, Sam found a spot in the bush to launch snow grenades. The kids kept him out of trouble for a little while...

Kym discovered that she really should have gone to the toilet before she left home ;)

Kym and the kids had some fun on the toboggens..

We decided previously that the snowball fight would be boys against girls - or mums against dads....but when we got there, it was every man (and woman) for themselves!  - Check out the shot in the middle, Sams feet aren't even touching the ground! Slam Dunk.

We all had a few cracks at Sam, but usually wound up copping double back. Kym is very brave, especially carrying that boulder.

See the big one in the air? That's Job trying to lend a hand to Kym......from 10m away. So brave honey. I think he actually lent a hand to Sam as Sam picked it up and broke it over Kyms head!

At least Kymbo wore him down a bit, his tongue is hanging out :)

Job took the camera for a little while so I could have a play. He took videos rather then snapshots (grrrrr :)) I told him it would have been nice if he had have kept the video still ;)

Husband and wife chase - poor Belinda got it down the pants - I feel your pain!

Ben got his own back. He didn't get any special treatment because he was carrying a baby.

Belinda proved that she could be sneaky too and poor Mariah got some snow down her jacket twice in a row - one extra time for the camera.

We noticed that we hadn't seen Joe for a while. We found him making a snowman with some of the kids

The snowman needed some protection from a couple of children who liked his nose.

We collectively decided (so I thought) to take Joe out. You can't really see it on the video, but I ended up getting way more snow than I bargained for - up my back and down my pants!!
Poor Sisi, she didn't know what to make of my screaming and got a bit upset whenever I did it - which was all the time. We didn't know it at the time, but she was probably feeling sick as she presently has croup.

Here's a frame by frame of my naughty husband, throwing snow while I was yelling "The Camera!!!"

My favourite part of the day was when I chased him up the hill, hung onto his leg to trip him up, jumped on top of him, rolled him onto his stomach and shoved handfuls of snow down his pants. He is stronger than I am so the only way I can pin him down is to make him laugh - which is really easy. It was so funny. He got me back by lying on top of me until I couldn't breath. No cameras, no people..... just us in a heap laughing - then Sisi came up the hill crying!

The kids were all so well behaved (as far as I could tell)

I loved taking photos of little Lucy, she was so cute sitting happily on her toboggan for a lot of the time.

I had to play with ONE photo!

Ben and his kids made a snowman too.

Lunchtime!

The kids had spent their time collecting and making a mound of snow inside a dead tree at the top of the hill. So after lunch it was a snowball fight for the kiddies. I headed towards the firing snowballs followed closely by Kymbo. Thanks to Mariah for getting some shots for me.

Ben the thrill seeker!

Belinda on a good day.

Sam couldn't resist throwing a few last snowballs. He was forever hiding in the bushes.

Spot the Terry

Just before we left for the day, Kymbo thought it would be nice for the four of us to have a photo together. Job took the first shot for us, then I saw Ben throw a snowball!

Those Terry boys think they're funny. Here's how it played out. Job just kept snapping away.

Rogers + Tais + Terrys x 2 = Way too much fun!!
